Elephant's Eye

  Framing Options

Object: Feather

Materials: Marble and Italian Smalti on Cement Board

Dimensions: 6.5 " x 10.5 "

Method: Direct with mortar

The peacock feather ... only Mother Nature can come up with such a combination of colors and shapes without the result turning out garish. This fancy plumage has been depicted time and time again by artists, and now I join the crowd.

The flow of the feather's branches fluttering freely in contrast with the lock-step direction inside the focal eye: that is what pulls me in.

Marble was used for all of the background and the majority of the feather. The colorful eye required a little punch of smalti glass to give this classic subject its due.
